Zum Ausklang des Jahres veröffentlichen wir in Zusammenarbeit mit der Siebdruck-Galerie MOTHER DRUCKER einen Totentanz-Druck mit dem Titel "Reigen“.

Totentanz-Darstellungen haben eine jahrhundertealte Tradition. Angefangen mit spätmittelalterlichen Fresken an Pariser Friedhofsmauern, über die Holzschnitte von Hans Holbein dem Jüngeren bis hin zu den im öffentlichen Raum gesprühten Skeletten von Harald Naegeli finden sich Beispiele bis in die heutige Zeit.

Und dies ist sicherlich nicht ohne Grund, kann doch im Totentanz die enge Verflechtung von Leben und Tod sehr direkt verbildlicht werden. Es geht dabei nicht nur um die Sterblichkeit an sich, sondern auch um das demokratische Grundprinzip, daß jeder Mensch früher oder später sterben wird, egal welcher Religion oder gesellschaftlichen Schicht er oder sie angehören mag.

Bei unserem Druck soll aber auch die spontane, lustvolle und lebensbejahende Natur des Tanzens an sich mitschwingen. Unser Totentanz ist nicht nur ein Tanz der Lebenden und der Toten, sondern auch ein Tanz der Geschlechter. Deshalb haben wir den Titel des Drucks auch als Zitat von Arthur Schnitzlers Gesellschaftsstück und damaligen Skandalwerk „Reigen“ gewählt.

In hiesigen Breitengraden stellt der Tod nach wie vor ein großes Tabu dar. Mit unserem Totentanz möchten wir bei den Betrachtern aber keine Beklommenheit auslösen, sondern viel mehr dazu aufrufen, sich ab und an die eigene Sterblichkeit vor Augen zu führen, um somit vielleicht auch ein anderes Bewusstsein für die eigene Existenz zu entwickeln und das Leben voll auszuschöpfen und zu genießen.

Um es noch treffender mit den Worten unserer befreundeten Künstlerin Polina Soloveichik zu sagen:

As the year draws to a close we release in collaboration with the gallery and print house MOTHER DRUCKER a print called "Reigen" (round dance) which shows a dance of the death also called dance macabre.

Pictures of the dance macabre have a century-old tradition. Starting with mid-aged frescoes on parisian cemetery walls, via woodcuts by Hans Holbein Jr. through to sprayed skeletons in public space by Harald Naegeli you can find examples up to today.

And this certainly has a reason, as the close intertwining of life and death is so very well depicted in a death dance!

It actually isn't only about mortality itself, but the basic democratic principle, that is: everyone will die sooner or later no matter which religion or class he or she might belong to.

But we also aspire the spontaneous, sensual and life-affirming nature of the dance to resonate within our print.

Our dance macabre isn't solely a dance of the living and the dead, but also a dance of the sexes.

That made us pick the title of the print as a citation of Arthur Schnitzlers, at that time, scandalous theater play "Reigen".

In our latitudinal lines the death imposes still a big tabu. With our dance we don't want to produce anxiety in the viewer, but rather to remember ones own mortality and thereby to maybe develop an awareness for the own existence and therefore to exhaust and enjoy our the life we're living.

To say it more precisely with the words of our fellow artist Polina Soloveichik: 

As you can see there is an additional special feature to the mint edition of "Reigen". The whole edition has had fold lines applied, this is because the edition is actually 3D. The great thing about this edition is that you can choose yourself which way you would like to to display it, whether it be like a cube or like a fan, in a frame or hanging. Every mint print is also supplied with 3 small clips to assist you in your display!
